Emergency Preparedness-

With the many disasters and future events that we have seen and await us we couldn't never be prepared too much. Emergency preparedness is really essential as water and food is for our bodies. The information that is given in this site will hopefully be very useful and life saving for those times of emergency.

Whether you are looking for long term emergency preparedness of survival, or for a couple of weeks, or for a couple of days of having to maybe leave your home, you should have some type of plans in the makings of what you should do and be ready for these kinds of disasters. We should never get into the mind frame of thinking that these events will never happen to us and we are protected in where we live. We don't have to look in our news too far to find disasters happening all around us as in like the recent hurricane that hit New Orleans off the coast of the USA. Many lost their lives there which might have been avoided if they had been prepared and had a plan derived up.

There are real benefits to being prepared as here quoted from FEMA (and we all know we can trust them right):

"Being prepared can reduce fear, anxiety, and losses that accompany disasters. Communities, families, and individuals should know what to do in the event of a fire and where to seek shelter during a tornado. They should be ready to evacuate their homes and take refuge in public shelters and know how to care for their basic medical needs. People also can reduce the impact of disasters (flood proofing, elevating a home or moving a home out of harm’s way, and securing items that could shake loose in an earthquake) and sometimes avoid the danger completely.
The need to prepare is real !
Disasters disrupt hundreds of thousands of lives every year. Each disaster has lasting effects, both to people and property. If a disaster occurs in your community, local government and disaster-relief organizations will try to help you, but you need to be ready as well. Local responders may not be able to reach you immediately, or they may need to focus their efforts elsewhere. You should know how to respond to severe weather or any disaster that could occur in your area - hurricanes, earthquakes, extreme cold, flooding, or terrorism. You should also be ready to be self-sufficient for at least three days. This may mean providing for your own shelter, first aid, food, water, and sanitation."

The more emergency prepared you are the better you will be able help yourself, but better than that, you will be able to help those who are less fortunate, who maybe didn't have the opportunity to prepare as they should have. So prepare a plan for these future disasters that could easily effect us.

Here is a list of types of disasters for being emergency prepared for and take notice of those that could effect you in your area:

*Natural Hazards:

Floods
Hurricanes
Thunderstorms and lightning
Tornadoes
Winter storms and extreme cold
Extreme heat
Earthquakes
Volcanoes
Landslides and debris flow
Tsunamis
Fires
Wildfires

*Technological Hazards:

Hazardous materials incidents
Household chemical emergencies
Nuclear power plant emergencies
Terrorism or Foreign Invasions
Explosions
Biological threats
Chemical threats
Nuclear blasts
Radiological dispersion device events

As you prepare there are many factors to keep in mind. One of them is not to overwhelm yourself of all the supplies that you need to purchase and not having everything you feel you need to be emergency prepared at this moment. Budget you finances so that every month you are purchasing items to prepare and slowly you will have what you will need. If it means of not going out to eat as much and using that money for preparing, then budget that way. But anything you can do to help you get closer to your goal in preparing, the better shape you will be in and confident when disasters might come your way.

There are real benefits to being prepared.

* Being prepared can reduce fear, anxiety, and losses that accompany disasters. Communities, families, and individuals should know what to do in the event of a fire and where to seek shelter during a tornado. They should be ready to evacuate their homes and take refuge in public shelters and know how to care for their basic medical needs.

* You should also be ready to be self-sufficient for at least three days. This may mean providing for your own shelter, first aid, food, water, and sanitation.

Using this guide makes preparation practical.

* This guide was developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which is the agency responsible for responding to national disasters and for helping state and local governments and individuals prepare for emergencies. It contains step-by-step advice on how to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters.

* Used in conjunction with information and instructions from local emergency management offices and the American Red Cross, Are You Ready? will give you what you need to be prepared.
